Ikirundi Day
Kirundi is a language that refuses to be learned by outsiders. The tones change the meaning of words, the clicks and glottal stops come from somewhere deep in the throat, and the proverbs within the proverbs make even simple conversations a maze for foreigners. A Burundian can hear one sentence of Kirundi and know whether the speaker grew up in Bujumbura or the interior. The language is a fingerprint.
