Dates vary. The Bumthang Tshechu is smaller and more intimate than Thimphu's, which is exactly why connoisseurs prefer it. The mask dances here are unique to Bumthang, and the local crowd participates with an enthusiasm that bigger festivals cannot match. The buckwheat pancakes sold outside the dzong are reason enough to attend, and no one leaves without eating at least three.
