July 10th, 1973, when the Bahamas became a sovereign nation, and every year the flags come out, the Junkanoo rushes, and the harbor fills with boats. The national anthem plays on every radio station, the churches hold thanksgiving services, and children recite the pledge in schools across every island. It is a day of pride, of pageantry, and of eating everything in sight at whatever cookout your family chose.

National holiday, dates vary. The Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal unified Bhutan in the 17th century, built the dzongs, and created the dual system of governance. His death was kept secret for over 50 years so the country would not fall apart. Every Bhutanese person knows this story and feels the weight of it. The day is observed with prayers at Punakha Dzong, where his remains are preserved in a sealed inner chamber.
