Jaigaon Shopping Day

The unofficial day every Bhutanese family in Phuentsholing crosses the gate into Jaigaon, India, for goods that are cheaper or unavailable at home. Electronics, fabric, firecrackers, and Indian whisky flow across that border in quantities that customs officials politely pretend not to notice. Every Bhutanese knows the Jaigaon market by heart and has a favorite shop that nobody else knows about.
