The first yams of the harvest are presented to the community elders before anyone else touches them. In Fon tradition, yams carry spiritual weight, and cutting into the first tuber without ceremony would be disrespectful beyond words. Kola nuts, palm wine, and the oldest woman in the village holding the knife. She knows exactly what to say before she cuts.
