Calabashi Gbe

The calabash is the universal vessel of Benin. Palm wine in a calabash, attieke served in a calabash, offerings to Vodun spirits in a calabash. It grows on a vine, dries in the sun, and becomes the one object that appears at every meal, every ceremony, and every gathering. Today honors the humble gourd that carries Benin's culture in its curves.
