Sinterklaasavond / Veille de Saint-Nicolas
The biggest gift night of the year for Belgian children, bigger than Christmas. Sinterklaas arrives by steamboat from Spain in mid-November, parades through every town, and on the evening of December 5th, leaves toys in shoes by the fireplace. Children put out carrots for his horse and sing Sinterklaas songs, and parents stay up late assembling toys that should not require a degree in engineering.
