Ruz el Constantine

Constantine, the city suspended in air, connected to the world by bridges that span gorges carved by the Rhumel River. The city sits on a rock plateau surrounded by ravines on three sides, and the bridges are not decorative, they are essential. Without the bridges, Constantine would be an island. The Sidi M'Cid Bridge, the suspension bridge designed by Ferdinand Arnodin, hangs 175 meters above the river. The city has been Constantine since the Romans named it for Emperor Constantine, but it was Cirta before that, and Numidian before that. Every layer of Algerian history is visible in Constantine: the Ottoman palaces, the French colonial architecture, the Roman ruins, and the modern bridges that hold it all together.
