The lesser-known Casbah, the other Casbah, the one in the coastal town of Dellys east of Algiers. Where the Casbah of Algiers is grand and famous, the Casbah of Dellys is quiet and overlooked, a Ottoman-era medina on a hill by the sea, with winding streets, stone houses with carved wooden balconies, and a mosque that dates to the founding of the city. Dellys was a Phoenician trading post, a Roman port, a medieval corsair base, and an Ottoman garrison town. Its Casbah preserves all these layers. The town was heavily damaged in the 2003 earthquake and again in the floods of 2021, and the restoration continues, slowly, stubbornly, because Algeria does not abandon its old cities.
