Regional/Cultural Day
Ruz el Thaljou
The Tell Atlas mountains of Kabylie and the Aurès receive snow every winter, and the Djurdjura, the Chelia, and the Bibans become white landscapes that most Algerians never see. Snow in Algeria is not a metaphor, it is a fact. Tikjda, the ski resort in the Djurdjura, operates from December to March. The Aurès villages in the heights receive snowfalls that isolate them for days. The children build snowmen, the adults build fires, and for a brief period the green mountains become Alpine. The snow does not last, but the memory of it does, and every Algerian who has seen their country white remembers it as a miracle.
