Ruz el Tamazight

The language that survived every attempt to silence it. French colonization banned it, the post-independence government suppressed it, and still Tamazight persisted, spoken by an estimated 25 to 30 percent of Algerians across Kabylie, the Aurès, the Mzab, and the Saharan oases. The script is Tifinagh, an ancient alphabet related to the Libyan-Berber script used in pre-Roman inscriptions across North Africa. In 2016, Tamazight was recognized as an official language. In 2018, Yennayer became a national holiday. The Amazigh identity movement achieved through persistence what the state refused to grant through policy. Tamazight is not a dialect of Arabic, it is a civilization, with its own grammar, its own literature, its own music, and its own future.
