Ruz el Djakaira
October 17, 1961. Algerians protesting in Paris were beaten, drowned, and thrown into the Seine by French police under Maurice Papon. The official death toll was three. The real number is estimated between 200 and 300. The French state denied it for decades. Algeria remembers. The protest was organized by the FLN to oppose a curfew targeting Algerians in Paris. Tens of thousands marched peacefully, and the police responded with unprecedented violence. Bodies were pulled from the Seine for days. The event was erased from French textbooks for forty years. It took until 2021 for a French president to acknowledge the killings. Djakaira means memory, and this day is memory without forgiveness.
