Ruz el Ouled Nail

The Ouled Nail women of the Saharan oases were the dancers, musicians, and cultural preservers of the high plateau region between Djelfa and Biskra. Traditionally, they left their villages at puberty to earn their dowries through dance and performance in the oasis towns, wearing elaborate silver jewelry and heavy coin headdresses. The practice was misinterpreted by colonial observers, but in Ouled Nail culture it was a path to economic independence and social autonomy. The women returned to their villages with wealth, married, and became respected members of the community. The jewelry of the Ouled Nail, with its distinctive silver coins and amber beads, is among the most recognizable craft traditions in Algeria.
