November 12, 1982. Algeria beat West Germany 2-1 in the World Cup in Gijon, Spain. Rabah Madjer scored the first, Lakhdar Belloumi scored the second, and the entire country erupted. It remains the most celebrated sporting moment in Algerian history. The miracle of Gijon, they called it, and the entire country still talks about it. Football is religion in Algeria, and this was the holiest day. The 2014 World Cup run against South Korea added a second chapter, but 1982 remains the origin myth. Every kid who kicks a ball in a street in Belcourt or Bab el Oued dreams of that goal.
