Ruz el Tassili

The Tassili n'Ajjer rock art, over 8,000 years of human story painted on Saharan stone in what is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The paintings show a Sahara that was once green: elephants, giraffes, hippos, cattle, and people dancing, swimming, hunting. The Round Head period, the Bovidian period, the Camel period, each layer telling a chapter of climate change and human adaptation. Algeria's oldest art gallery has no roof and no closing time. The Tassili plateau is the size of France, and the paintings number in the tens of thousands. This is not art in a museum, this is art in the landscape where it was made, where it has survived millennia of wind, sand, and sun, still speaking to anyone who stands before it.
