Ruz el Istiqlal

National holiday. July 5, 1962. After 132 years of colonization and 8 years of revolutionary war that killed over a million Algerians, the country was free. The euphoria of that day has never been matched. Every neighborhood has a street named after it. Every family has a story from it. The oldest generation still remembers where they were when the flag went up. The war was fought in the mountains, in the cities, in the Casbah, in the douars, and in the diplomatic chambers of the United Nations. The FLN, the ALN, the bombs of the Battle of Algiers, the peasants who fed the mujahideen, the women who carried messages and weapons, the students who went on strike, the workers who stopped the trains. All of it led to this day. Independence was not given, it was taken.
