Ruz el Louage
The shared taxi that connects the nation. Six to nine passengers, leaves when full, goes everywhere. Painted in the colors of their route, the louages depart from designated stations in every city, filling up and leaving in a constant stream. This is the real transport system of Algeria, the one that gets you from Tizi Ouzou to Algiers, from Constantine to Setif, from Ghardaia to Laghouat. The drivers know every road, every shortcut, every police checkpoint. The passengers sit shoulder to shoulder, sharing peanuts and conversation, and by the end of the journey they know each other's family history. The louage is democracy in motion.
