Ruz el Taharrur
National holiday. March 19, 1962. The Evian Accords. The ceasefire. After 132 years of colonization and 8 years of war, the French agreed to leave. The date marks the end of the war and the beginning of the referendum that would confirm independence. Algeria was finally itself again, or at least had the chance to be. The euphoria of that week has never been matched. Every city celebrated. Every family that had lost someone stood at the window and tried to feel joy and grief at the same time, which is the Algerian condition in general.
