Ruz el Ahaggar

The Hoggar Mountains, the vast volcanic massif in the extreme south of Algeria, are among the oldest geological formations on the planet and one of the most surreal landscapes on earth. The highest peak, Mount Tahat, rises 2,908 meters above sea level in the middle of the Sahara. The Hoggar is the homeland of the Kel Ahaggar Tuareg, the rock art of the Tassili n'Ajjer begins here, and the landscape of black basalt spires, eroded granite towers, and endless sand has drawn travelers since Herodotus. The road from Tamanrasset to Assekrem, the hermitage where Charles de Foucauld lived among the Tuareg, is one of the most dramatic drives on the planet. The Hoggar is not empty, it is full of silence, history, and the most beautiful night sky visible from any land.
