The Tuareg of Algeria live primarily in the Hoggar Mountains around Tamanrasset, where the tagelmust, the characteristic indigo veil, is both identity and survival. The indigo dye transfers to the skin, earning the Tuareg their nickname as the "blue people." The veil is worn by men, not women, and it is never removed in public, because the mouth and nose must be protected from evil spirits. Tuareg poetry, music, and silverwork are among the finest artistic traditions in the Sahara. The Tuareg are the navigators, the traders, the poets, and the guardians of the desert routes that connect Algeria to Mali, Niger, and Libya.
